When leading air traffic control systems specialist Copperchase was let down by a supplier, Scattergood & Johnson stepped in with
high-quality hardware and next-day delivery - at a substantial cost saving.
Now the high standard of Scattergood’s EXOR UniOP TFT HMI panels, backed by extensive in-house technical support, has secured an ongoing relationship between the two companies.
“We had similar displays ordered from a direct supplier who gave us a delivery date, but then wasn’t able to meet it,” explains Paul Boydell, director of
ATC engineering at Copperchase.
“We were forced to look at alternative options and Scattergoods came up with the UniOP displays, providing an almost identical spec.
The displays arrived virtually the next day - and then we found out they were considerably better value!”
Copperchase purchased five eTOP 315 panels, featuring industry-standard 15” TFT displays and full vector graphic capabilities, to control
runway lighting systems at Inverness Airport.
One of the displays is sited in the air traffic control tower, providing a
comprehensive graphical representation of the airfield. The others are sited around the airfield, operating with reduced functionality in maintenance roles.
Following the success of the application at Inverness, Copperchase asked Scattergoods to supply a latest generation eTOP 400 series HMI
panel for its operations at Wick Airport.
The 15” colour display runs EXOR’s latest HMI software, Jmobile, incorporating functionality normally available only on a SCADA system offering greater
customisation and enhanced features including remote access, high security and data logging.
“One of the main reasons we chose the 415 is its enhanced graphical features. We use a lot of pop-up windows, which can be quite time consuming
if we have to programme them ourselves,” says Paul. “Thanks to Jmobile, they are a built-in feature with the 415.”
In addition to its EXOR technology, Scattergood has supplied Copperchase with Phoenix Contact I/O modules for use in its runway lighting systems at Kirkwall Airport -
once again outshining alternatives from a direct supplier.
“We couldn’t find a supplier that could match Scattergoods in this price range. If we lose communication, we want the I/O to hold its state - and the Phoenix I/Os
are perfect for the job,” says Paul.
“All in all, we have had good service from Scattergood & Johnson - the prices are good, the products are good and the
technical back-up is very good.”
