Lovato Electric – BF/BFS Series Contactors

Engineered for performance.
Built for reliability.
Certified for safety (BFS Series).

Product Range Overview

The BF and BFS (safety) Series contactors are compact, high performance switching devices designed for the control of electric motors and power circuits in industrial and commercial applications. Built for reliability and long operational life, this range of contactors deliver consistent performance in demanding environments whilst optimising panel space.

BF Series Standard Contactors

Designed for Standard Motor Control Applications

The BF Series contactors have been designed as a versatile and space efficient solution for standard motor control and power switching applications. Engineered with compact dimensions and optimised terminal layouts, the BF Series range enables panel builders and OEMs to maximise enclosure space while maintaining straightforward installation and wiring. This range is well suited to conventional control panels where reliable switching performance, long mechanical life, and consistent electrical durability are required. With a wide selection of coil voltages (AC and DC), mounting options, and compatible accessories - including auxiliary contact blocks and thermal overload relays - the BF Series range provides flexibility across multiple industrial and commercial applications. Their robust construction ensures dependable operation in motor starting (AC-3 duty), HVAC systems, pumps, compressors, conveyors, and general machinery.

    Product Range & Specifications

The BF Series is categorised by its power handling and number of poles to suit different industrial applications:

3-Pole Contactors: This is the standard range for motor control (AC-3), covering 9A to 400A and with coil voltage to suit AC, DC, AC/DC, and DC Low Consumption.

4-Pole Contactors: Used for switching neutral lines or resistive loads (AC1), with capacities ranging from 25A to 600A.

    BFS Series Safety Contactors

    Designed for Safety-Critical Applications

The BFS Series has been designed to comply with the most stringent international safety standards, these contactors ensure functional safety and reliable operation in machinery and automation systems where operator and equipment protection are paramount. The BFS Series has been developed to meet the requirements of:

    • ISO 13849-1 – Safety of machinery: Safety-related parts of control systems.
    • IEC/EN 62061 – Safety of machinery: Functional safety of safety-related control systems.

These standards define the highest benchmarks for control system reliability in safety-related applications — and the BFS Series Contactors have been meticulously engineered to exceed them.

    Product Range & Specifications

The BFS Series range includes three-pole contactors designed for use with rated motor currents from 9A to 38A (AC-3, 400V).

    Available coil voltage options include:

    • 24V/DC
    • 24V/AC
    • 110V/AC
    • 230V/AC

    Depending on the model:

    • Sizes up to 25A are supplied with 2NO + 3NC Auxiliary Contacts.
    • Sizes above 25A include 2NO + 2NC Auxiliary Contacts.

This flexibility allows this range to integrate seamlessly into a wide variety of industrial safety and automation systems.

    Compliance and Functional Safety Features

BFS Series is designed to ensure maximum operational integrity, even under fault conditions. They comply with:

    • Mirror Contacts (IEC/EN 60947-4-1) Ensures that the NC auxiliary contact can never close while the NO main contact is closed — even in the event of a contact welding fault.
    • Mechanically Linked Contacts (IEC/EN 60947-5-1) Prevents simultaneous closure of NO and NC auxiliary contacts, guaranteeing safe and predictable contact behaviour.

These design features make the BFS Series ideal for integration into safety circuits, emergency stop systems, and machine control panels where fail-safe performance is non-negotiable.

    Enhanced Safety Design

The BFS Series introduces a series of improvements over traditional contactors, further enhancing safety and ease of use:

    • Tamper-proof auxiliary contact block - The auxiliary contact block is permanently attached to the contactor to prevent unauthorized removal or modification.
    • Prevention of manual operation - Protective guards prevent accidental or tool-assisted manual actuation, reducing the risk of misuse during maintenance or testing.
    • High visibility design - The auxiliary contact block is finished with a distinctive yellow cover, making it easy to identify components that are part of the safety circuit.
    • Clear operational status - A transparent front window allows operators to visually confirm the contactor’s status at a glance, improving diagnostics and maintenance safety.
